About Us
Dr. Donald E. Burwell started the Kids Advancing Hope Coalition (KAHC) nonprofit organization in 1998. In 1999, Dr. Burwell formed the first Michigan satellite of Kids Against Hunger, under the parent organization KAHC after attending a presentation where Richard Proudfit was speaking. Mr. Proudfit, the founder of the Minneapolis-based Kids Against Hunger, envisioned opening satellites across the country in hopes of eliminating child hunger. After visiting missionaries in Ghana, Nigeria, Guatemala, and Haiti Dr. Burwell's heart was touched with the need to do more for the children in need. Dr. Burwell shifted his focus to establishing meal packing events in Michigan's communities. Over several years, these events expanded to encompass the Great Lakes and northeastern regions of the United States.
In 2016, Kids Against Hunger Coalition of Michigan was renamed Kids Coalition Against Hunger (KCAH). KCAH, a Michigan-based 501(c)(3) organization, coordinates packaging events throughout the eastern half of the United States, providing food for starving children both worldwide and in local communities. The goal of Kids Coalition Against Hunger is to package over eight million meals annually by the end of 2026. To date, this food has been sent to over 100 food pantries in the northeastern quarter of the United States and 30 countries around the world. Kids Coalition Against Hunger mobilizes civic, religious, educational, foundations, communities, and humanitarian organizations to help fundraise, package food, and deliver meals.
